Type 0-2-0 is a steam locomotive with two moving axles in one rigid frame. Type 0-2-0 was common at the beginning of the 19th century; subsequently, locomotives of this type worked mainly on shunting and export work.

Recording methods for different classifications:

  • International (UIC): B
  • American : 0-4-0
  • Spanish and French: 020
  • Russian: 0-2-0
  • Swiss: 2/2

Description

This type included the very first steam locomotives of designer Richard Trevitik : Colbrookdale , Penidarren (the locomotive for which the patent was obtained), while the torque was transmitted to the moving axes using a gear transmission. Almost the first practical steam locomotive, “ Puffing Billy, ” built in 1813, was of a similar construction.

In 1825, the Stephenson plant launched the Lokomotiv No. 1 steam locomotive, in which the moving wheel pairs were connected by drawbars ( drawbars ), and the moment was transmitted directly to them from the steam engine. This steam locomotive opened traffic on the first public railway - Stockton - Darlington , and its name ( Locomotive ) became a household name.

By the middle of the XIX century, the traction force of biaxial locomotives was not enough to drive freight trains, and the short length did not allow the use of developed steam boilers. However, steam locomotives of this type had one significant advantage - a small rigid base, which allowed them to pass curved sections of the track with small rounding radii (several tens of meters). This turned out to be a valuable quality for working on industrial routes and in shunting work, where it is often necessary to work with individual wagons, or in small groups of wagons, for which the traction force of the biaxial locomotive was sufficient. And tank- type locomotives of type 0-2-0 also had a small length.

Other locomotives

Other biaxial locomotives that have a group drive, that is, when the moment from one engine is transmitted directly to both axles, can also be classified as type 0-2-0. An example is motor vehicles and diesel locomotives with mechanical and hydraulic transmission, such as, for example, TGK2 and TGM20
