Manzherok ( south Alt. Manurek - a watchhorse or foggy hill) is a village in the territory of the Manzheroksky rural settlement of the Maiminsky district of the Altai Republic of Russia . Located on the banks of the Katun River, 34 km from the village of Maima , 470 km of the Chuysky tract .

History
It was founded in 1856 by peasant settlers. Local Altai nomads, looking at Russians settled down, began to adopt Russian customs. Mixed marriages appeared.
By 1875, Manzherok became a large settlement. In the same year, the Maimin cattle trader Yefim Chendekov built a church, giving it his name. October 15 , on Efimov’s day , he came to the village, on this occasion a prayer service was served. In 1883 , a parish school was opened.
By the 1890s, there were 35 yards in Manzherok, of which 7 belonged to indigenous Russians. By 1910 , there were more Russians in the village. In 1917 , there were 60–70 households.
Before the revolution, the main occupation of the inhabitants was cattle breeding . Few were engaged in agriculture: they sowed oats , millet , buckwheat and planted potatoes . The Manzherokites burned charcoal , lime , smoked tar , tar , chopped wood and rafted it along Katun , traded with the steppe villages. In 1932 , a recreation center for workers of the regional and regional executive committees was built. In 1941 , the premises of the base were occupied by a children's camp. In 1963 , a pioneer camp named after V.I. Lenin.
In 1966, singer Edita Pyekha sang a song called “Manzherok” (“ Tell me, my friend, what is Manzherok? .. ”), dedicated to the festival of Soviet-Mongolian friendship held near the village. The song gained great popularity [2] .
In Manzherok there were many full-scale shootings of the films “ Such a guy lives ” and “ Your son and brother ”. In the 1970s, a furniture factory was operating. During the years of perestroika, desolation was observed.
On February 22, 2003, near the Manzherok, the mayor of Barnaul Vladimir Bavarin was tragically killed [3] .

Infrastructure
The village has gas stations, shops, restaurants with national cuisine, cafes, Mezhetsk, branches of Sberbank of Russia and Russian Post.
Tourism
On the southern outskirts there is a source of mineralized drinking water “Manzheroksky”, which has the status of a natural monument . In the village area are located tourist complexes "Manzherok", park-hotel "Manzherok", "Chalet" Priscalny "" camp site "Katunsky thresholds", guest house "Rest" at Mezhetskih. Widespread rental housing in private homes. 2 km from the village is a favorite place for tourists - Lake Manzherok . Opposite the village is the threshold of the same name on the Katun River.
