Born in Georgia, was an entrepreneur and journalist, founded ( 1828 ) the still-existing newspaper Columbus Enquirer [1] , then received a law degree. In 1834 , the donkey was in Texas. He participated in the war for the independence of Texas , in the spring of 1836, joining the army of Sam Houston . On the eve of the Battle of San Jacinto , on April 20, in a skirmish with the Mexicans, he bravely saved two surrounded Texans, for which he was immediately upgraded from private to colonel and was put in charge of cavalry. In this new capacity he participated in the battle of April 21st.
The second president ( 1838 - 1841 ) of the independent Republic of Texas . He sought official recognition of the sovereignty of the republic on the part of European states (as a result of which Texas was recognized by France, Great Britain and Belgium) and financial support on their part (this did not happen), and launched several bloody armed campaigns to oust the Cherokee and Comanche Indian tribes from Texas , moved the capital from Houston to Austin . Got the nickname "father of Texas education", took 50 leagues of land for two schools, which later became Texas A & M University and the University of Texas at Austin .
After the accession of Texas to the United States in 1846, he was a member of the Texas Legislative Assembly, from 1857 to 1858 . US ambassador to Nicaragua .
