Biography
Born in Kamenetz-Podolsky in the family of a lawyer in 1894 . Soon the family moved to Odessa, and in 1899 - in Elizavetgrad . In 1907 he again moved with his parents to Kamenetz-Podolsky , where he entered the provincial men's gymnasium (he graduated from the II department of the gymnasium in 1914) [3] [4] . From childhood, he showed outstanding abilities in mathematics.
In 1912 he entered Kiev University . Starting from the second year, I attended the seminars of Professor D. A. Grave on the theory of analytic and algebraic functions. Over time, he wrote his own essay on this subject and proved the arithmetic theorem of monodromy. In 1915, because of the war, the university moved to Saratov , where Chebotaryov became close to B.N. Delone , one of Grave’s best students. In 1916 he was left at the university to prepare for the professorship, which he received in 1918 .
In 1918 - 1921 he was a privat-docent at the university, and also was engaged in teaching at Kiev universities . In 1921 he went to his parents in Odessa , where he continued his studies.
In 1927, he was appointed to Kazan University as the head of the department of mathematics. In 1932, he spoke at the World Congress of Mathematicians in Zurich with a report on the centenary of the death of Evarist Galois . He created the Kazan Algebraic School, among students, for example, Naum Meiman .
During the Great Patriotic War, he tried to volunteer for the front, but was left behind, where he was engaged in research on the vibration of the trunks of naval guns when fired. He was twice nominated for the Stalin Prize for the results of his work, but he received it only posthumously for the monograph “Resolution Problems”. Back in 1929 he was elected a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences ; also in 1938 and 1946 he was promoted to full member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR , but did not attend for ideological reasons ( “I did not and does not take any part in the circles on the study of Marxism-Leninism organized by the party committee for scientists”, “Professor Chebotaryov refers to reactionary part of the profession ” , etc.).
In 1945, he became the first director of the Kazan Institute of Physics and Technology of the USSR Academy of Sciences , however, he worked in this position for only a year.
In 1947, he died of stomach cancer after a major operation, the day before which he was still making a report to the Mathematical Society .
