Creation History
After analyzing the combat use of heavy tanks, the Soviet command ordered the creation of an artillery (assault) heavy tank. The main idea was an attempt to create a multipurpose heavy tank, capable of successfully fighting both the fortifications and the enemy’s armored vehicles.
The main armament was a 122-mm tank howitzer of the U-11, a separate-cartridge loading, created in December 1941 by the engineers of V. Sydorenko and N. Usenko.
Work on the new machine was carried out in the period from 1941 to 1942. During this period, one prototype was created, which received the label "Object 229". Later it was recommended for use under the designation KV-9.
Initially, the plant planned to release a limited batch of 10 tanks, but in reality it was possible to release only one.
Abbreviation "KV" went from a politician Clement Voroshilov.
In 1942, on the basis of the KV-1 were built prototypes of self-propelled artillery KV-7 with two ZIS-5 guns or one ZIS-5 gun and two 45 mm caliber. According to the designers, doubling and tripling of weapons was to compensate for the lack of tanks in the troops. The KV-9 tank, armed with a 122-mm howitzer U-11 , was also built in the pilot line.
