Content
Geography
The district is located in the southeastern part of the Khakass-Minusinsk depression . It borders with the Beysk , Ust-Abakan , Tashtyp districts of Khakassia and the Kemerovo region .
Area 8201.14 km². The area is located on a hilly plain, in the southern and southwestern parts there are mountains, plateaus. According to the relief of the territory, the region belongs to two natural zones: the Khakass-Minusinsk depression and the mountains of the Kuznetsk Alatau . The steppe part is divided into the Priabakan valley-steppe and Priabakan low-mountain-steppe zones.
The Abakan River flows here, serving as the natural south-eastern border of the region. It is multi-water, with a fast current, has a winding channel , forms many tributaries, branches and elders. In total, about 39 rivers flow with a total length of 1,124 km. Askiz River is one of the largest tributaries of the Abakan River, its length is 124 km.
The unique natural monuments of Askiz district are the lakes Khankul and Balankul .
The climate is sharply continental. Sharp fluctuations in air temperature and rainfall are characteristic. The average July temperature is +19 ° C, January −20 ° C. The frost-free period lasts from 80 to 120 days. The annual rainfall ranges from 250 to 780 mm. Southwestern winds prevail. In April and May almost every year winds of great strength are observed, reaching a speed of 17-20 m / s. Winter is set in late October - early November.
The area is rich in forest and land reserves, a variety of mineral resources. The district accounts for 8.9% of the agricultural land of the republic and 20.8% of the rural population.
History
Askiz district was formed on March 30, 1924 on the territory of the abolished Askiz and Ust-Yesin volosts. It included 10 village councils.

Economics
Economically active population: 13.0 thousand people, which is 31.0% of the total population (2003), of which 8 thousand people are working. Unemployment rate: 5.7% (2003). The largest number of unemployed is concentrated on the territory of the Beltirsky, Balyksinsky, Birikchulsky village councils, where enterprises, mainly the timber industry complex, for the development of which these settlements were created, ceased their activities.
In the Askiz district, gold mining cooperatives of the Askiz LTD Mine of Prospectors LLC, Georgievskoye LLC and Zolotaya Zvezda CJSC operate. Iron ore production at the Thuy mine was stopped (Alfa Service-Klab LLC (owner of Evrazruda company since 2002). The intensive development of Askizavtotrans OJSC , which has a number of subsidiaries: Avtodom LLC, Khakasavtotrans Petroleum CJSC , Askizpassazhiravtotrans CJSC, etc.
Social Infrastructure
On the territory of Askiz region there are 67 educational institutions:

- 6 main secondary schools,
- 17 elementary schools
- 15 preschool educational institutions,
- 4 educational institutions for additional education of children,
- an orphanage for orphans and children without parental care,
- GBPOU RK PU-18,
- Republican State Educational Institution "Askiz Special Boarding School",
- Republican state institution "Inter-district social and rehabilitation center for minors."
Cultural institutions:
- 35 houses of culture and clubs,
- 34 libraries
- 6 children's music schools and an art school,
- 4 museums.
District health care includes:
- central district hospital
- 5 rural district hospitals,
- 3 medical outpatient clinics
- 33 feldsher-midwife points,
- 70 doctors, 336 people of paramedical staff.
The number of doctors in the district: 87%, the average medical staff: 99%.
Transport
The area has a favorable transport and geographical position. Railway transport is represented by the Novokuznetsk - Abakan Yuzhsiba line, the dead-end lines Kamyshta - Sayanogorsk , Askiz - Abaza , Biskamzha - Top of the Toya . There are regional highways 95K-002 Abakan - Ak-Dovurak and 95N-202 Askiz - Top of Choi .
Culture and Historical Heritage
Archaeological sites are located on the territory of Askiz district: ( mounds , earthen pyramids, menhirs , statues, cave paintings), the remains of ancient mines , canals, and so on.
Since 1980 , the Khakass folk festival Tung Payram has been revived in the region.
There is Askizsky male choir (artistic director Yu. T. Morozov), which in 2004 participated in the III International Choir Festival "Moscow - the heart of the world."
Askizsky district is the birthplace of famous scientists N.F. Katanov , S.D. Maynashev , L.R. Kyzlasov , Ya. I. Sunchugashev , M.I. Borgoyakov , S.P. Ulturgashev and many others.
The Khakass Worker newspaper (1930) is published in the region.
