The decision to produce small cars with the costs of its development on both sides was made in July 12, 2001, by the presidents of Toyota and PSA Peugeot Citroën, Fujio Cho (neopr.) . and Jean-Martin Folz (neopr.) . respectively. This project was named B-Zero (Neopr.) . . Peugeot 107 and Citroën C1 are versions of one car from different companies (brands).

The Aygo price started at 8,500 euros (6,845 British pounds). The car differed from its counterparts ( Peugeot 107 and Citroën C1 ) in the interior, brand, name and easily recognizable rear of the car. It was planned to produce 300,000 cars a year, 100,000 cars of each brand. Sales began in July 2005 and 5- and 3-door hatchback versions were available. Two engine versions were available: a petrol 1.0-liter 3-cylinder with a capacity of 68 hp. (51kW), and diesel 1.4 liter HDi 4-cylinder with 54 hp (40kW).

In January 2010, some Aygo vehicles, as well as the Peugeot 107 and Citroën C1, were recalled due to jammed accelerator pedals. According to information provided by Toyota, the malfunction occurred only on cars with an automatic transmission.
