Biography

Born May 27, 1926 in Moscow in a Jewish family [3] .

During the Great Patriotic War, from the age of 15, he worked as a nurse in a military hospital, then he was on the labor front, worked as an assistant to a gas welder and as a mechanic in the Mosenergo Heating Network, and later as a driver.

He graduated from the Moscow Institute of Oriental Studies in 1952 , graduate school of this institute in 1955 , candidate of historical sciences (the dissertation is devoted to the recent history of Iraq ), doctor of historical sciences (1967, the dissertation is devoted to the political role of the army in developing countries).

He was a literary officer in the department of the countries of Asia , Africa and Latin America of the magazine "New Time" . Since 1957 - at the Institute of World Economy and International Relations: Junior, Senior Researcher, Head of Sector, Head of the Department of Economics and Politics of Developing Countries. In 1982 , after the arrest for the dissident activities of one of his subordinates (Andrei Fadin), he was removed from the post of head of the department and remained to work at the institute as the main scientific employee.

In combination, he was a professor at MGIMO , where he lectured on the problems of developing countries. Professor, Department of World Politics, National Research University Higher School of Economics . At HSE, he taught students studying in the areas of “international relations” and “regional studies”. Professor of the Russian-British Master's program in Political Science at the Moscow Higher School of Social and Economic Sciences (MSSES). Member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the journal “ Russia in Global Affairs ”. Columnist of the Politkom.ru site (project of the Center for Political Technologies ).

In the 1990s, he worked at the American Peace Institute as a visiting researcher. He was engaged in research on the topic “Interethnic Relations in the Former Soviet Union as a Potential Source of Conflict” (grant from the MacArthur Foundation ). He gave lectures at 23 universities in the USA , taught regular courses at Princeton, New York, American universities, and at the University of Hofstra.

His works in the field of studying the theme “Army and Politics in Third World Countries” became classic. His professional interests were Islamic fundamentalism, the Palestinian problem, the Arab-Israeli conflict, international terrorism, and the countries of the Middle East .

Often acted as a guest expert at the Echo of Moscow radio station.

He was fluent in Russian, English, French, German, Spanish, Arabic and Polish.

An urn with ashes was buried in a columbarium at the Novodevichy cemetery near parents.

  • Wife - employee of IMEMO RAS Isabella Yakovlevna Labinskaya (born 1937).
  • Daughter - actress of the Taganka Theater Victoria Kuznetsova (1958-2019).
    • Son - philologist Mikhail Seleznev (born 1960) [5] [6] .
