History
Cambridge, as a city, is about 2000 years old. The Romans began , having once placed their military garrison on the banks of the Kem River. The place, as it turned out later, is good: convenient river traffic and access to the seas. Merchants came here, followed by the monks who opened several monasteries in Cambridge. And monasteries in the Middle Ages, as you know, were repositories of knowledge.
There was such a “profession" - an itinerant teacher. These people wandered around cities and countries and disseminated knowledge, mainly on theology, church and civil laws, logic. They, in fact, laid the foundation of the university, which later became famous throughout the world. So the fate of Cambridge was determined. It happened at the very beginning of the XIII century. Oxford was taken as the basis, since the University of Oxford appeared earlier - this is when the university consists of several autonomous colleges, each of which is an educational, scientific and administrative center and is not subordinate to any other educational institution.
