The 1902 World Figure Skating Championships were hosted by the International Skating Union in London . At that time, only four participants represented figure skating. It was assumed that, as in previous championships, all athletes will be men, but among them was a woman - a representative of the UK, Maj Sayers . [1] She already participated in competitions against men, and her husband worked in the national association and also competed. [2] There were no rules prohibiting this at the time (they were introduced the following year). Sayers took second place, with a big advantage over Martin Gordon from Germany . The champion was Ulrich Salkhov , who later gave Sayers his gold medal. [2]
