Biography
Born September 3, 1963 , Whitehall, Montana , USA , in the family of a teacher. Soon the parents moved to Eugene (Oregon) , where they divorced. Sam Adams stayed with his mother, living on government benefits. His mother could not find work, and therefore went to Portland (Oregon) . Adams stayed in Eugene and lived independently for most of his school years, graduated from Eugene South High School, and then - University of Oregon .
Adams began his political career in 1986 in the Democratic Party , campaigning for its candidates. In 2004, he won the election to the Portland City Council. Engaged in issues of utilities, small business, transport, culture and art, ecology. One of his successful projects is the Portland aerial tram .
In October 2007, Adams announced his intention to run for mayor of Portland . He won the primary election, gaining 58% of the vote. Adams became the first open gay mayor of a major US city with a population of about 570,000 (and more than 2 million along with agglomeration), which is three times the population of Providence , the next largest city in the USA with open gay mayor David Chichillin . During the election campaign, a scandal erupted over the intimate relationship between Adams and a young man who at the time of their meetings did not reach the age of agreement , but this did not prevent the candidate from winning the election [1] .
