Formula 1

Yo Siffert made his debut in Formula 1 in 1962 . Sieffert took part in the 5th Grand Prix of the season of 9 for the private teams Écurie Nationale Suisse and Écurie Filipinetti in Lotus cars ( 21 and 24 ). In 1963, he bought the Lotus 24-BRM from Filipinetti and became an independent pilot, setting up his own Siffert Racing Team. At the French Grand Prix, the driver first finished in the points zone, taking 6th place.

In 1964, Sieffert continued to play as part of his own team. From the second leg of the season in the Netherlands, his car was the Brabham BT11 , which he finished fourth in Germany . At the end of the season, Yo Siffert became the pilot of the private RRC Walker Racing Team , continuing to compete in the Brabham B11, and in the first race for her, at the 1964 US Grand Prix , won the first podium in his career. At the end of the season, he took 10th place in the standings.

However, the next three seasons in the team of Rob Walker ( 1965 - 1967 , from the Belgian Grand Prix in 1966 to the Cooper T81 ) did not bring podiums to Siffert. In 1966, he scored points only once (for 4th place in the US Grand Prix ).

A breakthrough in Sieffert's appearances on the Walker team occurred in 1968 , with the acquisition of the Lotus 49 team. The first Sieffert race on this machine took place in Spain . In Monaco, he started third, and in the British Grand Prix won his first victory in Formula 1, becoming the first Swiss to win the credible Grand Prix in the “royal races”. In the season finale in Mexico, Sieffert started his pole career for the first time in his career, but only sixth finished due to technical problems. At the end of the season he took 7th place.

In 1969, Siffert spent the sixth season on the Walker team, continuing to perform on Lotus ( 49B ). He started the season successfully, coming fourth in the Grand Prix of South Africa and winning podiums at the Grand Prix of Monaco and the Netherlands . However, then Siffert did not score a single point, despite the high starting position in Germany , the USA and Mexico (in the last two races he left the race very early). In the overall standings, Sieffert became 9th.

In 1970, Yo Sieffert was the first pilot of the factory team in Formula 1. He represented the debut in the "royal races" team March . Despite the successful debut of March (48 points, 3rd place in the Cup of Designers), Sieffert did not score a single point in 1970.

In 1971 he moved to BRM and spent the most successful Formula 1 season in his career (who turned out to be the last). I started three times from the first row, won the Austrian Grand Prix , having won the Grand Slam (starting from the pole, leading from start to finish, the best lap time), and came second in the season finale - the US Grand Prix . Scored 19 points, the result was 5th place in the overall standings.

Yo Siffert’s last race was the Extraordinary race at Brands Hatch . In it, the Swiss started from the pole. But on the 15th lap of the race, his car turned over, it caught fire, and Sieffert died of asphyxiation .
