Club career
Nottingham Forest
Enoch West was born on March 31, 1886 in Hucknall-Torquard , Nottinghamshire . He worked as a miner and played in local football teams when in 1903 he was signed by the Sheffield United club of the First Division [1] . Despite the fact that West remained a player of the " blades " for two seasons, he did not manage to make his debut for the main team. In June 1905, he was sold for just 5 pounds in Nottingham Forest , which was performing at that time in the Second Division of the Football League [1] .
In the new club, West has achieved remarkable success. Well interacting on the field with his partner, legendary forward “ foresters ” Grenville Morris , he scored 14 goals against his opponents in the very first season. The same number of goals on his account was in the next season, when Nottingham left the Second Division in the First [1] .
In the 1907/08 season, West continued to score goals, in particular, he scored 4 goals in the November match to Southampton , as well as hat tricks against Chelsea and Blackburn Rovers [1] . At the end of the season, West became the top scorer of the First Division with 27 goals in 35 games [2] . However, despite the striker's personal successes, his club showed not very outstanding results, taking only 14th place in the table in the next two seasons [3] .
In total for the " foresters " West spent 184 matches in which he scored more than 100 goals. He is one of six players in the history of Nottingham Forest who managed to achieve this mark [4] .
Manchester United
In June 1910, West moved to Manchester United , replacing Jimmy Turnbull in an attack in the attack. Formed an effective combination with Sandy Turnbull in the attack. In his first season at the club, he scored 19 goals in 35 championship matches and helped his team win the championship [1] .
In total, he played 181 matches for United and scored 80 goals [5] .
Football Scandal
In 1915, Enoch West was found guilty of participating in a match match along with Manchester United team-mates Sandy Turnbull , Arthur Wally , and Liverpool players Jackie Sheldon , Tom Miller , Bob Purcell and Thomas Fairball . All participants in the collusion were lifted for life from football.
West categorically protested against his disqualification, stating his innocence, and even filed a libel suit. However, he lost twice in court, after which he played in Ireland under an assumed name, was revealed and re-disqualified [6] .
Westu's disqualification was removed only in 1945, when he was 59 years old. At the same time, until his death in September 1965, Enoch West insisted on his innocence.
Many years later, Graham Sharp released the book Free The Manchester United One , in which he tried to justify West and prove that he was disqualified unreasonably and did not participate in a conspiracy [7] .
