Biography

Rasul Gamzatov was born on September 8, 1923 in the Avar village of Tsad in the Khunzakh district of Dagestan in the family of Gamzat Tsadas (1877-1951) - the national poet of Dagestan.

He studied at Araninsky high school. In 1939 he graduated from the Avar Pedagogical School. Until 1941, he worked as a school teacher, then as an assistant director in the theater, as a journalist in newspapers and on the radio. He was awarded the medal "For Valiant Labor in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945."

From 1945 to 1950 he studied at the A. Gorky Literary Institute in Moscow .

He was elected as a deputy of the Supreme Council of the Dagestan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic , deputy chairman of the Supreme Council of the Dagestan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, deputy and member of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR . For several decades, he was a delegate to the writers' congresses of Dagestan, the RSFSR and the USSR, a member of the Bureau of Solidarity of Writers of Asia and Africa , a member of the Committee on Lenin and State Prizes of the USSR , a member of the board of the Soviet Peace Committee , and vice-chairman of the Soviet Committee for Solidarity of the Peoples of Asia and Africa .

Member of the Council of the Union of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR 6-11 convocations (1962-1989) [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] [10] from the Dagestan ASSR. In 1962-1966 and since 1971 he was a member of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. Full member of the Petrovsky Academy of Sciences and Arts .

In 1973 he signed a letter from a group of Soviet writers to the editorial office of the Pravda newspaper about Solzhenitsyn and Sakharov .

He died on November 3, 2003 at the Central Clinical Hospital in Moscow . He was buried in the old Muslim cemetery in Tarki at the foot of Tarki-Tau Mountain, next to his wife’s grave.

Rasul Gamzatov began writing poetry in 1932, published in 1937, in the republican Avar newspaper Bolshevik Gor. The first Avar book was published in 1943. He also translated classical and modern Russian literature into it, including A. S. Pushkin and M. Yu. Lermontov , V. V. Mayakovsky and S. A. Yesenin .

At the Literary Institute. A. Gorky Gamzatov met and made friends with young poets, Naum Grebnev , Jacob Kozlovsky , Elena Nikolaevskaya , Vladimir Soloukhin , who began to translate his poems into Russian. Wife Patimat Saidovna (1931–2000, since 1964 headed the Dagestan Museum of Fine Arts ) [16] , three daughters and four granddaughters, including the famous Shakhri Amirkhanova and Taus Makhacheva . Festivals

  • Since 1986, in Dagestan every year in September (until 2003 - in August) the White Cranes holiday has been held. These days, schools in Dagestan host lessons on the life and work of the poet, and in libraries - Gamzat readings [72] .
