The basis of the approach to gender relations in the book is used, as a metaphor, the assumption that men and women are so different that they can be considered immigrants from two different planets. Gray uses a similar metaphor - the Roman god Mars and the goddess Venus , as expressed stereotypes of men and women, respectively.
In contrast to many psychologists who pay more attention to the similarity between the sexes, Gray focuses on the differences. As an example, a typical problem: women think that men do not know how to listen. This is due to the fact that in a difficult moment a woman needs to talk it out, she wants to get support from a man and recognition that her difficulties are significant. The man is in a hurry to immediately find a solution to the problem, instead of listening carefully. Another problem: it seems to men that women are trying to remake them, like to “cut” and give recommendations. For example, when a man fails to complete some task on his own, the woman believes that she should help and begins to give advice. But the man does not see this as help, but in distrust of his own abilities, because for men it is important to achieve everything independently. Other gender differences raised in the book are the “point system” in men and women, behavior in stressful situations, etc.
