Biography
He studied at the Leipzig Conservatory under Alois Rekendorf (piano) and Salomon Yadasson (composition), in 1898 - 1899 he improved under Eugène d'Albert , and was later self-taught. In 1900 - 1901 he performed in Great Britain, where, in particular, he performed Beethoven’s Fourth Concert , replacing the diseased Alexander Siloti . In 1901 he made his debut at the Promenade Concert with the first concert by Mendelssohn and Variations on the Theme of Paganini Brahms . Major success came to Bachouse in 1905 , when he was awarded the first prize at the Rubinstein competition in Paris , which allowed him to begin a full-fledged international concert career.
In the 1912-1913 season , Bachouse performed in the United States, where he performed the Beethoven Fifth Concerto conducted by Walter Damros and gave a solo concert at Carnegie Hall . From 1905, Backhaus taught at the Manchester College of Music , from 1925 to 1926 at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia , but he never considered himself a good teacher. Despite the success overseas, for several decades the pianist performed almost exclusively in Europe (in 1928 he visited the USSR on tours), in 1931 settling in Switzerland . It was only in 1954 that he came to the USA with concerts from Beethoven’s music, and the public again met him with enthusiasm.
Backhouse readily made notes - as early as 1909, for the first time in history , he recorded the performance of a piano concerto with an orchestra ( Grieg's Concerto ), and in 1928 - all of Chopin's etudes. Twice he recorded the complete cycle of Beethoven’s sonatas: a mono-recording of all sonatas was made in the early 1950s ; One of the most recent projects by Backhaus was the almost complete stereo recording of Beethoven’s sonatas from 1959–1969 (only Sonata No. 29 was not recorded in stereo).
An important place in the pianist's repertoire was also occupied by works by Brahms , the performance of music by which Bakhouse is considered one of the best.
