The political system of Dominica is a parliamentary republic .
The head of the country is the President , elected by parliament for a five-year term. Executive power is vested in the government, led by the prime minister . Legislative power is represented by the Assembly - a unicameral parliament . The parliament consists of 32 deputies: 21 of them are elected by universal suffrage in the country on a multi-party basis, 9 are appointed by the President on recommendations (5 from the prime minister, 4 from the opposition leader). There are also two special members in the Assembly. All citizens of the republic over 18 are entitled to vote. The judiciary is independent by law.
