Montjuic

Montjuic [2] ( Cat. Montjuïc ) - the famous mountain in the capital of Catalonia, Barcelona , located in the eponymous administrative unit of the urban area of Sants-Montjuic . Montjuic is 173 m high. Here Barcelona hosted the 1929 World's Fair and the 1992 Summer Olympics . Thanks to its many attractions and magnificent parks, Montjuic attracts both tourists and Barcelonaers. The origin of the name of the mountain has not been exactly established to date. The two main versions say that Montjuic can be the "mountain of Jupiter " (from lat. Mons Jovicus ) or the "Jewish mountain" (from the old Catalan . Mont juïc ).

Attractions

The buildings built for the 1929 World's Fair include the futuristic Magic Fountain with its nightly color highlight and the National Palace with the National Museum of Art of Catalonia (MNAC), which stores a huge number of works by Catalan artists.

Above are the parks of Montjuic Nou Jardi Botanic and Jardins de Mossèn Costra i Lljobera, distinguished by a variety of flora and fauna , as well as the original spiral communication TV Tower Montjuic and the Olympic Village with the Palau Sant Jordi Sports Palace, Luis Kompanis Olympic Stadium . Not far from the stadium is the Olympic Sports Museum named after Samaranch .

Montjuic also houses the Museum of the Catalan artist Joan Miró - the Joan Miró Foundation , as well as the Montjuïc Fortress , built in 1640 , from the observation deck of which offers magnificent views of the city and port. The fortress was notorious during the Franco regime: several Catalan socialists and politicians were executed in it, including the former president of the Catalan government, Luis Kompanis . Montjuic also has the architectural and ethnographic park-museum of the Spanish Village (Poble Espanyol) with replica buildings, craft workshops and catering facilities that are characteristic of different regions of the country.

An underground cable car and then a cable car from the city center and a cable car from the port and beach area of Barceloneta lead to the mountain, as well as city buses from Plaza Espana .
