After the collapse, many texts were executed in a subsequent project by Mikhail Fenichev - Yes, Yes, Yes .
Characteristics of Creativity
The group’s creativity refers to such works as the play “Dostoevsky-Trip” and the novel “The Blue Fat ” by Vladimir Sorokin , the stories of Philip K. Dick , the music of Depeche Mode and The Prodigy ( The Fat of the Land ) [2] and many others. other
The musical style in which the group played had different definitions [4] :
- “ Cyberpunk hip hop version”,
- "Alternative hip-hop local dressing",
- "Breathtaking rap is not for everyone."
Initially, as the name implies, we thought about what we were doing as a kind of hip-hop. But in the process of working, they quickly realized such a thing: the texts of Misha Fenichev are very unusual, and his manner of execution is also. All this falls out of what is commonly called rap, which means that music should fall out of what is accepted in rap or hip-hop as much as possible. Therefore, hip-hop and rap is not something that we develop or continue, but that from which we are repelled as the opposite. After all, to take a step, you need a place from which you can push off with your foot. [four]Alexander Zaitsev
It makes no sense to compete with American rappers. Misha will not read better than them, and we will not produce better than, for example, Timbaland . But we can do something of our own, if we do not try to imitate anyone. [four]Ilya Baramia
We would like to think that 2h - just pushed off from hip-hop, but is a kind of new, Russian direction in the combination of music and poetry. Therefore, our work with Stas Baretsky, Lyokha Nikonov and Andrei Rodionov are with 2h in the same row. [five]Ilya Baramia
I never listened, did not like and did not write hip-hop. The fact that the 2H Company project is considered hip-hop is an annoying misunderstanding. There is hip-hop, there is Russian hip-hop, if you come to them and ask (and who else to ask?) They will tell you that 2H So is not hip-hop, and they will be right. In the case of Misha Fenichev, we are interested in a unique sane statement about the world and time, and not the forms that it takes or not. [five]Alexander Zaitsev
History
Early life and interests of participants
- Mikhail Fenichev
Julian Barnes , Neil Gaiman , Andrew Crumie , Andrei Levkin , Neil Stevenson , Vladimir Sorokin , Umberto Eco [6]
He was born on December 4, 1979 in Gorbunki , where he went to the same local kindergarten and school as Mikhail Ilyin, and both parents worked at the Lomonosovskaya poultry farm. In a pioneer camp, he was fond of Alice . Studied at SPbGASU with a degree in ventilation and gas and heat supply. He worked as a seller in the music store " Union ", then in a furniture factory [6] . It was he who introduced Alexander and Ilya to Cyril [7] .
A connoisseur of literature and modern cinema [6] .
- Mikhail Ilyin
Born June 27, 1980. He studied at the same school as Fenichev, but one class younger. He graduated from RGPU named after A. I. Herzen , having received the profession of a teacher of geography [6] . He taught ecology at school, worked in a music store [8] .
- Ilya Baramia
Born June 18, 1973 in Lomonosov . He graduated from the Physics and Mathematics Boarding School No. 45 at Leningrad State University [6] .
- Alexander Zaitsev
Born in 1973 in Stepnogorsk . After graduating from school with a gold medal, he entered the Faculty of Applied Mathematics - Control Processes at Leningrad State University [6] . Member of the duet "Christmas tree toys".
Among the favorite music artists - early Matthew Herbert , Autechre (album “ Untilted ” - “a masterpiece in general, it's like jazz of the 50s, like Cecil Taylor and Coltrane - the same freedom, the same improvisation, only done with the help of sequencers and fm- synthesis ”) [9] .
- Kirill Ivanov
A journalist, a member of the group " The Biggest Simple Number ", who also worked on the tracks "Snoop" and "White" from the album " Wild Christmas Toys ". He took part in reading the texts “Rap is no longer feces” and “Philip Dick” of the album “The Art of Caring for AK-47” [6] . The author of a television story for Channel Five about underground Russian hip-hop [10] .
Province Group
The rap group "Province" was created in the mid-1990s by Mikhail Ilyin and Fenichev; their old friend, who used the program, also participated in it, it was he who later became the prototype of Alexander’s character in the track “Major Paranoia” [11] . The group has accounted for only a couple of performances at rap festivals (including the Moscow Rap Music in 1998, where there were 11 more participants [12] ) and in clubs. One demo cassette was also published [13] .
Then all this became uninteresting. People in the party listened only to rap, the same groups, played at the same parties, nothing new happened. [eleven]
According to Baramia, Fenichev did not like this experience so much that "Misha flatly refused to speak" [13] . However, the group still did not split up right away, but moved to the side of trip-hop , refusing to use a computer in favor of live instruments [11] .
Creating a Quartet
Well, I don’t know about rap, but the word hip-hop is exactly what unites us in this project. So let's call 2H COMPANY - a company of hip-hop lovers. [eleven]Alexander Zaitsev
Joining forces in 2001 [1] with "Christmas tree toys" - Alexander Zaitsev and Ilya Baramiya, the group began to record compositions to their liking in rap style. After some time, A. Zaitsev proposed the name itself, as a derivative of the English expression “ hip-hop ” - “2H” and the company [11] . Also, according to the participants, the name can be understood as “dental company” (“2H” - “tooth”) or as “ mascara ” (drum) [8] , sometimes similarity with the hydrogen isotope deuterium - 2 H is also noted [14] . The 2H Company project for Christmas Tree Toys was the first rap experience (before that, there were vocals with Addie Brik and Vera Gogol) [15] [11] .
The name of the first track “Prov”, recorded and published in 1999, can be understood not only as “province”, but also as an abbreviation for the Russian word “test” or “test”. The St. Petersburg label “ ChebuRec ” became interested in the group and the composition, including the track in the CD - a collection of Russian electronic music “Exit to the City of Two” [16] , released on December 1, 2001 [17] . Perhaps this was the first case of a combination of rap reading and experimental electronics [ specify ] .
Psychosurgeons
I once sat in a pub in Cambridge and listened to Moloko's new album. I thought - how great it would be when I arrived in Russia to go to the bar and hear there a new album of the Russian group; make it just as cool. We define ourselves as a Russian project: we remember who we are, why and where. If we can be interesting to others in the world, then only by how we differ from them. [eleven]Alexander Zaitsev
In the summer of 2002, the group gathered again in the studio, recording the tracks "Bullshit" and "Cosmos" [16] . At that time, raw versions of the tracks “Seven Lives”, “Major Paranoia”, “Ursula Kim” appeared under other people's beats [11] .
On July 16, 2004, the ChebuRec label released on CD a debut album of the Psychosurgery group [18] - a combination of indirect IDM rhythms and categorical social aggression in the lyrics [19] . At the end of the year, the album became No. 1 on the Zvuki.Ru website, lasting 3 months in the listening charts , and was also called the 2004 debut [4] . The album received attention from the radio stations “ BBC ” and “ Radio Liberty ”, several programs about 2H Company were released [4] .
In 2005, they spoke and gave interviews on the TVCi channel in the television program “Open Project: Samples” [8] . In the same year, they performed at a concert with the group “ Psyche ”, where they received spits on the stage and negative cries of a half thousand people [9] . July 27, performed at the Moscow club " B2 " [20] . On July 30, they took part in the Afisha Picnic festival in Krasnaya Presnya Park, where A. Zaitsev met Oleg Nesterov , the head of the Snegiri Music label, which later re-released Psychosurgeons in the same year [11] . In August, took part in the festival " Invasion " [5] .

The Art of Caring for AK-47 Album and the Ring Ballet
On October 6, 2005, the group performed material yet to be released at the Jao Da Club; excerpt from the concert video - performance of the track “Rap is no longer feces” - hit the DVD collection “Hip Hop In Russia 3”, 2006 [21] [22] ; the songs “Phil, part one” and “Phil, part two” were performed there, released in the next album by one piece called “Philip Dick”, the track “Stripes” was also presented. On the eve of Halloween , on the evening of October 28, they performed at the Moscow factory of technical papers "October" [14] [23] .
In June 2006, Ilyin, Fenichev and Zaitsev appeared on the radio in the Argentum program on Ekho Moskvy immediately after two concerts [24] . Also in 2006, the label “Snegiri” released a joint album “YOI” entitled “ Wild Christmas Toys ”, in which “Enemies” appear as the second composition [11] [25] .
In 2007, in February, Mikhail Ilyin left the group [26] . On March 22, the album “The Art of Caring for AK-47 ” was released, the cover of which was painted by Pasha Shevchenko, a permanent artist of Christmas Tree Toys [27] . In April, the first issue of Billboard magazine in Russia was released, in which there was a conversation between the band members [26] .
In the same month, the Mariinsky Theater premiered the world's first rap ballet called “ Ring ” [13] [28] with choreography by Alexei Miroshnichenko [29] [30] , which was even mentioned in the story on Channel One . Subsequently, the track "Shadow Absurd" from the ballet was published on the Internet. On June 14, the group performed in the Tula club “Sigma-Odin” [31] , in December - in the Chelyabinsk club “Garage Underground” [32] .
Recent years of activity (2008-2009)
The first concert of 2008 was given on January 31 at the Ikra club [33] [34] . In the same year, Mikhail Fenichev participated in the recording of two tracks (“16th Floor”, as well as the refrain of the song “This”) on the album “ SBPCH Orchestra ” of the band “The Biggest Prime Number”, which was released in November 2008 via the label “ Snegiri ” " [35] [36] ; the text of the track “16 floors” was originally planned for the ballet, but in the end was not used in it [7] .
February 27, 2009 performed in the St. Petersburg club "A2". On June 22, at the Anna Akhmatova’s Museum in the Fountain House, by order of the poet’s 120th birthday, the poet Mikhail Fenichev, to the music of Baramia and Zaitsev, read his new poem “Svyatki 2009”, standing in the window opening on the second floor, while the audience was on the street; [37] however, the track was never recorded in the studio [38] . In the same year, the group disbanded.
After the collapse
Most likely, this is a pause. Because we didn’t really like what is happening now. We got involved with concerts and, as a result, with studio work. I don’t know how long? [39]Mikhail Fenichev
Lyricist and vocalist Mikhail Fenichev is now a member of the “ There are There are ” collective, which has existed since 2010 : “in addition to the traditionally long and phantasmagoric texts, for example, a guitar and trumpet sound there” [15] . In addition to new lyrics, the band’s repertoire also includes many songs with lyrics by 2H Company, but with new arrangements . The band’s first album, “ My Dear Man, ” used texts composed by Fenichev back in the days of 2H Company; in 2010, there were even demos on the network of eight tracks that were not released by the breakup group [39] for a total duration of 37 minutes. Fenichev admitted that the participants of 2H Company did not really like those test recordings of tracks [39] . The text “Christmas time” 2009 was converted into the song “Christmas time” in the second album of the group [38] .
Since 2017 , Ilya Baramia has been a member of the AIGEL duet together with Aigel Gaisina. Ilya is also the curator of the direction “Contemporary Music and Sound Design” at “Mayak School of Creative Industries” [40] [41] .
Alexander Zaitsev has released several solo releases.
Criticism
The combination of surreal texts with an extraordinary sense of humor , written in Russian , and unusual electronic music immediately attracted a lot of attention and caused controversy [1] . The members of the group were named the most relevant and intellectual representatives of the Russian hip-hop scene [14] . The music columnist for Kommersant newspaper Boris Barabanov in 2007 called the group "almost the main musical discovery of the first half of the decade [2000s] in Russian non-mainstream music" [2] . On the pages of Kommersant Weekend in 2009, the team was also honored with a description of “an outstanding group with a first-class musical component and brilliant lyrics”, and about Mikhail Fenichev it was noted that he “reads like no one reads in Russian-language hip-hop ” and that his recitations are “perfectly flawless: harmonious logic even in a surreal text, sensitive intonation , diction ” [3] . In a 2008 Khabarovsk youth magazine Urban Trash, in an interview with Ilya Baramia, it was noted: “It is normal for Russia when domestic groups are an adapted variation of what already exists in the West. “2H Company” is not among these groups. They are what was supposed to appear here, now, and in exactly this form. An original and non-standard musical phenomenon at the junction of experimental electronics and hip-hop, which does not need a genre definition ” [13] .
The Barnaul edition of Vatokata in 2010 wrote: “At first glance, SPBCH has simpler texts than 2H Company, more concise ones - and therefore it seems that the meaning is deeper in them” [42] . Radif Kashapov from Zvuki.ru , speaking of the 2H Company and There are There are, wrote that “a quick-fire reading of texts can be put on one shelf of the classics of modern Russian poetry” [39] . Alexander Gorbachev from Afisha Daily wrote in 2011: “Before there was Decl with all his gop company, there was Kasta , there was someone else, but it was after the appearance of 2H Company that I personally made sure that the Russian hip Hop can be not only an outlandish pathocultural phenomenon, but also a natural art, which also has its own homegrown masters of ceremonial who can tear an almost science fiction novel in four minutes, ”and the journalist noted that“ the second record is even more difficult and more intricate than the first ” [15] . Natalya Yugrinova, 2H Company, was named the most shameful project of Russian hip-hop by the Colta.ru reviewer of the site Colta.ru , however, in contrast to her debut album, “There are There are” (which, in her words, “is very easy to listen to”), she noted that “in 2H Company albums could only be desperately listened to. ” [43]
The poet and literary critic Lev Oborin in a video interview of 2019, answering the question of which of the Russian rappers passes the test of finding their poems on a blank sheet (like Kendrick Lamar ), called Mikhail Fenichev [44] .
The album “Psychosurgeons” was named one of the most brilliant and fashionable discs of the year 2005 - “In the biting postmodern texts of 2H Company, the prose of life acquires magical features” [14] . In 2009, in a mini-review of the anarchist publication "Autonomy" on the debut album, it was said that "the lyrics could be published in some kind of poetry collection", while the music was called boring [45] . In the review of the weekly student newspaper UniverCITY Tomsk it was written: “The favorite of modern youth Ivan Alekseev aka Noize MC calls himself“ The Best Freestyler of Russia ”. It may be so, but only in speed the guys from 2H Company will give a hundred points ahead ”; The Psychosurgeons album was rated 4/5 with a note that “the album is interesting, but has different effects on the audience”, and “Seven Lives” and “Major Paranoia” were named its best tracks [46] [47] . The publication “Choose the temptations of a big city. Samara "album" Psychosurgeons "was called great, and it was also noted that" in many ways the SPDS move along the vector proposed by 2H Company " [48] .
