History
Ground
In June 1598, Juan de Onyate led a group of Spanish settlers through a harsh stretch of desert called Hornada del Muerto ( Spanish Jornada del Muerto - Dead Man's Path). The Spaniards who left the desert were met by the Pueblo Indians from the village of Teipana, who gave the colonists food and water. Because of this, the Spaniards renamed the village in Socorro ( Spanish: socorro - help). Later, the same name began to be applied to the neighboring settlement of the Indians - Pilabo [1] .
