The group was founded by the brothers Fermin and Iñigo Mugurusa (former members of the Kortatu group) and Kaki Arkaraso ( M-Ak and Kortatu ). Soon they were joined by Mikel "Anestesia" (guitarist of Anestesia ), and in 1991 - Mikel "BAP !!" (drummer of BAP !! ). This composition did not change until the breakup of the group in 1996 .
The style of Negu Gorriak was unique: in their songs, the musicians combined rap , rock , punk rock , reggae and Basque folk tunes .
The group has always taken an active political position. All members of the group advocated for the independence of the Basque Country . The songs were performed in Basque and were mainly devoted to national liberation. In order not to depend on producers and record companies, the musicians created the self-governing label Esan Ozenki . The bassist and drummer participated in the Basque civil disobedience movement ( Spanish Insumisión ). Negu Gorriak conducted a tour in El Salvador in support of the left-wing radical Liberation Front named after Farabundo Marti . She gave her first concert directly opposite the prison .
Their song Ustelkeria is notorious . It refers to the lieutenant colonel of the police, the leader of the Spanish "death squads" GAL Enrique Rodriguez Galindo , who was suspected of drug trafficking . In 1995, Galindo banned the song and paid a fine of 15 million pesetas . In response to this, an international solidarity campaign with Negu Gorriak called Hitz egin was organized! BAP took part in a concert in support of the group !! , Nación Reixa , Javier Montoya , Deabruak Teilatuetan , Ama Say , Su Ta Gar , Banda Bassotti , Anestesia , Kashbad , Baldin Bada , Dut , LinTon Taun , EH Sukarra , Etsaiak . During the campaign, a new album of the group was released, bearing the same name as the scandalous song - Ustelkeria , which included demos , concert, rare recordings and mixes . In 2000, after the breakup of the group and after Galindo was sentenced to 71 years in prison for kidnapping and killing people, the Supreme Court of Spain quashed the court 's decision in favor of Galindo. In honor of this event, in January 2001, the group gave a series of farewell concerts, which were attended by over 30,000 people.
In total, Negu Gorriak recorded six albums. The best of them is the third - Borreroak Baditu Milaka Aurpegi .
