Carandiru ( port. Carandiru ) is a film by the Argentine-Brazilian director Hector Babenko , based on real events described in Drausio Varella's book “Station of Carandiru” [1] . In 2003, he was nominated for the Golden Palm Branch at the Cannes Film Festival [2] .

Description
The film Karandiru tells the audience about the life and life of the inhabitants of the "House of Detention" Karandiru, the most famous prison of São Paulo , which existed from 1920 until its demolition in 2002 [3] .
Story
Dr. Varella, on a voluntary basis, as a volunteer arrives at the Carandira prison to prevent AIDS among prisoners. On the first day, he gets acquainted with life and order in a crowded prison. Many prisoners tell him their stories of the events that caused their arrest. These are real stories about love, death, revenge, drugs.
The culmination of the screen action is the riot of prisoners and the “Massacre of Karandira” that followed. As a result of a police operation in 1992, 111 prisoners were killed against rioters [4] .
