History

For centuries, , located north of the city, has been used by Spanish explorers and Indians to overcome the Rocky Mountains , but for wagons this road was impassable.

The postal station located on this site was called Willow Springs in 1877-1879, Otero in 1879-1880, and was renamed Raton in 1880 [1] .

In 1879, the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe railway company acquired a local toll road and organized a busy railway line. Raton began to develop rapidly as a railway, mining, and cattle-breeding center for northeastern New Mexico , and also became the county’s administrative center and major trading center for the region.
