Born in the family of bass singer M.E. Izmailov (1898-1965). He studied clarinet playing at the Kazan Military Music School with A. Gruzdev, then at the Cheboksary College of Music, and finally at the Leningrad Conservatory in the class of V.I. Gensler (he graduated in 1948 , but he also completed postgraduate studies in 1951 ). In 1953 , won the second prize at the Reich International Competition, held in Prague as part of the Prague Spring festival. He taught at the Leningrad Conservatory (1950-1957, taught clarinet and wind ensemble classes), a music school with her (since 1959), and a music school named after M.P. Mussorgsky (since 1962).
Since 1947, Izmailov worked in the ZKR Symphony Orchestra of the Leningrad Philharmonic . He also performed in various chamber ensembles, including the spiritual quintet of the Leningrad Philharmonic ( Lev Perepelkin - flute, Vladimir Kurlin - oboe, Mikhail Izmailov - clarinet, Lev Pechersky - bassoon, Vitaliy Buyanovsky - French horn), with whom he toured abroad. For outstanding performing skills, Izmailov was awarded the Santa Cecilia Academy Medal.
