Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 12.2 km². Belen is located in the Albuquerque Basin on the west bank of the Rio Grande River .
History
Belen was founded in 1741 by a group of Spanish colonists led by Diego Torres and Antonio Salazar, who a year earlier received permission to settle on a plot of land known as Belen Grant. The new city was named Nuestra Señora de Belen. Recognizing the strategic importance of the city, the Spanish authorities in 1760 built a fort in Belem to protect settlements along the Rio Grande. In 1793, a Catholic church was built and a parish was founded.
Belen was officially registered as a municipality in 1918. At first it was called “the village of Belen”, and later became the “city of Belen”.
In 2010, the monastery of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (ROCOR) was founded in the city - the skete of the martyr Cornelius the Century .

Demographics
According to the 2000 census [1] , 6901 people lived in Belen , 1778 families, there were 2,596 households and 2,952 residential buildings. The average population density was about 241.5 people per square kilometer. According to the census, the racial composition of Belem was as follows: 67.50% of whites , 1.07% of black or African Americans , 1.65% of Native Americans , 0.17% of Asians , 0.16% of people from Pacific islands , 4.06% - representatives of mixed races, 25.39% - other ethnic groups. Hispanic made up 68.61% of all residents.
Of the 2,596 households, 34.8% raised children under the age of 18, 44.3% were married couples living together, 17.8% had a female family without husbands, 31.5% were non-families. At the time of the census, 26.2% of the total number of families lived on their own, while 10.6% were single elderly people aged 65 and over. The average household size was 2.61 people, and the average family size was 3.14 people.
According to the 2000 census, the population according to the age range was as follows: 28.8% - residents under 18 years old, 9.6% - between 18 and 24 years old, 25.5% - from 25 to 44 years old, 21.0% - from 45 to 64 years old and 15.1% - aged 65 years and older. The average age of residents was 35 years. For every 100 women in Belene, there were 91.5 men, while for every 100 women 18 years and older there were 90.4 men over 18 years old.
The average household income was $ 26,754 , and the average household income was $ 30,765. At the same time, men had an average income of $ 26,551 per year against $ 21,300 of average annual income for women. Administration
