ISO 3166-1

This standard defines codes for most countries and dependent territories of the world:

  • two-letter (ISO 3166-1 alpha-2),
  • three-letter (ISO 3166-1 alpha-3) and
  • three-digit digital (ISO 3166-1 numeric) code.

Two-letter codes are used as the basis for some other codes, for example:

  • for currency codes according to ISO 4217 ,
  • with little discrepancies for top-level country domain names (ccTLDs) on the Internet.

For other applications see ISO 3166-1 .

GOST 7.67

In the Russian Federation and some CIS countries, the interstate standard GOST 7.67 -94 is used. The standard GOST 7.67 "Codes of country names" establishes alphanumeric designations of country names in coded form, common for various information processing systems, its storage and exchange, as well as unified rules for the formation of codes. The standard is a translation of ISO 3166 -88, Codes for the Submission of Country Names.

Currently, the standard GOST 7.67-2003, entered into force on January 1, 2005, is in force.

By the Decree of the State Standard of the Russian Federation of December 14, 2001 N 529-st) (as amended by N 1/2003, 2/2003, 3/2004, 4/2004, 5/2005) in 2001 the All-Russian Classifier of Countries was adopted and put into effect World OK (MK ( ISO 3166 ) 004-97) 025-2001 (OKSM).

In 2003 , the eighth edition of the Standardization Agreement (STANAG) adopted the use of three-letter ISO 3166 codes with the exception of the code for Macedonia. With the ninth edition, NATO is switching to four- and six-letter codes, based mainly on ISO 3166 with some exceptions and additions.
  • Code system for car license plates : Car country codes ( [1] ).
  • The Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) has its own codes used by the US government and the CIA Fact Book : List of Country Codes (FIPS) , see also List of Region Codes (FIPS) .
