Career

Otto Gloria was born on January 9, 1917 in Rio de Janeiro, in the family of Portuguese “second wave” emigrants: his paternal grandmother was from the Azores , and his maternal from Vila Nova de Gaia . He began his career in his hometown, playing for local teams, including Botafogo , Vasco da Gama , and Olaria . At the age of 25, he completed his career as a football player and took up the coaching path, taking on the coaching of the youth team of the Vasco da Gama club, and then he became an assistant to the club’s head coach Flavio Costa , and then he took over the reins on his own and his club won the first football the trophy in Gloria’s life is the State Championship , then Gloria briefly led the Vasco da Gama club.

In 1954, Gloria was invited to join the club from the homeland of his ancestors - Benfica , Gloria agreed, he arrives in Lisbon on June 24 and immediately gets to work. He runs “Benfica” for 5 seasons and was able to win 2 Portuguese Championships and 3 Portuguese Cups with this club, and left Gloria’s team due to a conflict with the club’s leadership who did not want to buy the players he needed. But, despite the departure, it was Gloria who became the person who laid the foundation for the team, which in a year, led by another coach, Hungarian Bela Guttmann will win the European Cup . After Benfica, Gloria remained in Portugal and led the Belenenses and Sporting clubs.

After Portugal, Gloria left for France in February 1962, where he stood at the helm of the famous Olympic Marseille club, which played in the second French division. Gloria set a goal to enter the major French league, and the Brazilian coped with the task: under his four-month leadership, Olympic did not lose a single game and entered the major league. After France, Gloria briefly returned to Brazil to head Vasco da Gama again, and then again went to Europe to take over the reins of Porto club, with whom Gloria became twice second, losing the Portuguese Cup and taking second place in the championship country. Then the Brazilian led the Sporting, which led to the conquest of the championship.

Gloria’s work led the Portuguese Football Federation to offer Gloria, in addition to his main job, to help Luis Afonso prepare the Portuguese national team for the 1966 World Cup in England, but then Gloria himself became the team’s head coach and led the team to third place. After this success, Gloria was invited by the Atletico Madrid club, but in Spain the Brazilian could not achieve success with the team and returned to Portugal, to Benfica and even reached with the team to the European Cup final, in which the truth, Benfica lost to the club Manchester United 1: 4.

After Benfica, Gloria worked with the clubs Portuguese Portugues Desportos , Vasco da Gama , Gremio and Santos in his homeland, Monterrey in Mexico, as well as the national teams of Portugal and Nigeria, since the last Gloria won the African Cup of Nations .
