The bay is located 30 km south of the city of Hagway Grande , 75 km west of the city of Cienfuegos and 150 km southeast of Havana . On the western side of the bay are coral reefs bordering the Zapata swamp (part of the peninsula of the same name ). Mangroves and vast swamps lie on the east coast of the bay.
The origin of the Spanish name of the bay Bahía de Cochinos is probably not associated with “pigs” ( Spanish. Cochinos ), but rather with the Spanish name of the Atlantic fish Cochino ( lat. Balistes vetula , Spanish. Cochino ) [3] [4] . Near the northern end of the bay is the village of Buena Ventura, and 35 km south-east of it, near the small town of Giron , named after the famous French pirate, is the beach of the same name and the village of Playa Giron .
Cochinos Bay is known as the site of a military operation prepared by the US government to overthrow the government of Fidel Castro .
