Neamt Fortress

The territory where the city is located was inhabited by humans back in the Neolithic era. According to some Romanian historians (e.g. Hashdeu ), Tirgu Neamt was founded by the Teutonic Order in the 13th century to protect Transylvania from the Polovtsian raids - the Cuman , who settled on the territory of present-day Moldova . According to other sources, the city was created by Saxon immigrants who crossed the Carpathians from the Bistrita region and organized a shopping center here. The German origin of the founders of the city is also indicated in the name of the city by the addition of Neamt , which in Romanian means German , German . However, a number of Romanian scholars dispute the theory of the German origin of the city.

For the first time in written sources, the city of Tirgu Neamt was mentioned in 1387 . It is one of the oldest cities in the territory of the former principality of Moldova. Already in the XIV century there was a powerful fortress.
