Lima (region)

Lima ( Spanish: Lima , Quechua Lima suyu ) - a region in the central part of the country's coast (formerly administrative-territorial division - department) Peru . The area of ​​the region is 32,127 km². According to the data for 2017, the population is 910,431 people [3] . The administrative center is the cities of Huacho and Lima . Geography

Located in the central part of the Costa - the coast of the country. It borders with the regions: Ankash (in the north), Huanuco (in the north-west), Pasco and Junin (in the east), Huancavelika (in the southeast) and Ica (in the south), as well as with the province of Lima (in the west). In the west it is washed by the waters of the Pacific Ocean. Near the ocean there is a narrow desert plain ( costa ) with a width of not more than 40 kilometers. In the east, it gives way to the steep slopes of the Andes , which are divided by intermountain valleys. Maximum heights reach 5 kilometers or more.

Population

The total population, together with the autonomous province of Lima , is 9,485,405 people. The overwhelming majority of the population lives in the capital province (8.6 million; 90.4%). The population of the rest of the region - 910,431 people - is concentrated on the coast. The population density is 28.3 people / km², in the mountain provinces - from 2 to 10 people / km². There is population growth (1.17% per year), in the mountainous provinces - a natural decline.

Gender structure: women - 51.2%, men - 48.8%. Métis prevails in the national composition - 70%, Quechua - 16.9%, the proportion of Quechua is high in the provinces of Cahatambo and Oyon . Speakers of the Hakaru language, one of the Aymara languages, live in the Tupe region in the southeast. The literacy rate is 93.1%, in the mountains - from 86 to 91%. Among believers, Catholics prevail (77%) [4] .
