“The Beautiful Mill ” (op.25, D795) ( German: Die schöne Müllerin ) - the first vocal cycle of Franz Schubert to the words of Wilhelm Müller . Consists of 20 songs. Composed in 1823, four years before the second cycle of the Winter Path and is dedicated to a friend Karl von Schönstein . It is known in Russian by I. Tyumenev and A. Mashistov.
The songs tell of a young miller who goes on a journey to seek happiness. He sees the mill and falls in love with the daughter of the local miller. Love brings him joyful and then woeful experiences: he has a happier rival, a hunter. Having again gone on a journey, the young man tells the stream as the only true friend about his lost love and after that he wants to leave his love at the bottom of the stream.
