The weightlifting competitions at the 1976 Summer Olympics took place from July 18 to July 27 at the specially-equipped ice rink “Saint-Michel Arena” in Montreal . They were attended by 173 athletes from 46 countries. For the first time weightlifters competed in the biathlon Olympic Games ( jerk and jerk ) after the cancellation of the third type of exercise - bench press . Also, for the first time at the weightlifting competitions, doping control was carried out, as a result of which 6 athletes, including 2 champions ( Zbigniew Kachmarek , Valentin Hristov ) and 1 prize-winner of the Games (Blagoy Blagoev), were convicted of doping and disqualified.
Within the framework of the Olympic tournament, medals of the 50th World Weightlifting Championships were also played.
