Pavel Andreevich Korchagin is the main character of Nikolai Ostrovsky ’s novel “ How Steel Was Tempered ” ( 1932 ) and films made from this work. Immediately after the publication of the novel, Pavel Korchagin, whose youth during the Civil War and the New Economic Policy passed in the struggle for communism and the happiness of the working people, became an ideal role model for several generations of Soviet people.

Films
The novel was repeatedly filmed in the USSR , while each time the image of Pavel Korchagin appeared before the audience in a new light.
The first film based on the novel by Nikolai Ostrovsky was released in 1942, during the difficult time of World War II . Then Pavel Korchagin was called to inspire the exploits of the Soviet people who are fighting the Nazi invaders. His image was embodied by the actor V. Perist-Petrenko, who repeated the tragic fate of his hero - immediately after filming in the film, he went to the front and died in the same year [1] .
In 1957, the joint directorial work of Vladimir Naumov and Alexander Alov “ Pavel Korchagin ” was released, in which the main character was played by Vasily Lanovoi . As film critic V. Tulyakova wrote in 1967,
| Vasily Lanovoi coped with this task perfectly. His performance, he seemed to have modernized this classic image of the Komsomol member of the twenties, breathed new life into it, without losing anything from the literary image. [2] |
In 1973, the director Nikolai Mashchenko created the six-episode television film How Steel Was Tempered , in which Vladimir Konkin embodied the image of Korchagin on the screen. This role made the young actor popular, and in 1974 brought him the Prize to them. Lenin Komsomol [3] . Pavka performed by Konkin was different from the previous screen Korchagins with more lyricism, romance and intelligence. In 1975, under the same name " How Steel Was Tempered, " a film version of this film was also released.
In 2000, the 20-episode television film How Steel Was Tempered , shot by Chinese filmmakers in Ukraine , was recognized in China as the best series of the year. Ukrainian actor [4] starred in the role of Korchagin.
Cultural and social influence
In a number of cities of the former Soviet Union there are streets named after Pavel Korchagin - this is the rarest case of capturing a literary character in official city place names . So, there is Pavel Korchagin Street in Moscow [5] , in Kirov , in Nizhny Novgorod , in Astrakhan (and in the latter case, the street received this name after the collapse of the USSR ) [6] , in Biysk , in Rudny (Kostanay region, Kazakhstan) , in Zaporozhye , in Gorlovka (Donetsk region, Ukraine), in Pavlograd (Dnipropetrovsk region, Ukraine; renamed), in Tiraspol . In addition, Pavel Korchagin Street is in the Gagarinsky district of the city of Sevastopol . Korchagin Street exists in Sochi (it houses the N. A. Ostrovsky Literary and Memorial Museum ), in Novosibirsk , Orel , in Bryansk , in Yoshkar-Ola , in Novoaltaysk , in Alma-Ata , in Kokshetau . Korchagin Boulevard exists in Naberezhnye Chelny . Korchagintsev Street was in Kharkov (renamed).
