Club career

Middlesbrough

Jonathan was born in the small town of Tornaby-on-Tees, a suburb of Middlesbrough , and began to play football at the youth academy of rivermen. On January 12, 2008, Grounds made his debut for Middlesbrough , leaving the starting lineup in the Premier League match against Liverpool (1: 1). In March, he signed a new two-year contract with Boro, and in total, in the 2007/08 season, he took part in 6 meetings.

On September 1, 2008, Jonathan went on a three-month lease to Norwich City . [2] September 13 made his debut for the "canaries", coming on as a substitute in the victory game against Plymouth Argyle (2: 1). On October 1, due to the large number of injured, the defender was recalled by Middlesbrough and three days later took part in the winning match against Wigan Athletic . On October 18, the rivermen were defeated at Chelsea’s home 0: 5, and Grounds failed the game and was replaced already in the 54th minute with a score of 0: 3, after which the donkey was in deep reserve.

On January 7, 2009, Jonathan went on a second lease to Norwich City [3] . Middlesbrough started the 2009/10 season in the Championship and Jonathan managed to return to the base of his home club by playing in 20 matches. On June 18, 2010, Grounds extended the contract with the rivermen until 2012 [4] . Despite this, on August 31, the defender was leased for six months to the Scottish Hibernian . As part of the Hibbs, the Grounds played in 15 matches, marking one goal scored in the Scottish League Cup game against Kilmarnock .

On January 10, 2011, the defender returned to Boro. In 6 matches, in which he took part, “rivermen” conceded 14 goals. On February 12, Jonathan scored his only goal for the Rivermen in the match against Swansea City , which ended in a 3-4 defeat.

On August 25, 2011, Grounds went on a regular lease to Chesterfield Club and two days later made his debut in a game against Exeter City . Having played a total of 16 matches, on November 26, Jonathan returned to Borough. On February 22, 2012, Grounds, along with his teammate Jonathan Franks, was leased to League One Club Yeovil Town [5] . Three days later, the defender made his debut for the Glovers, replacing him in the 61st minute and marking an assist in the match against Carlisle United .

Oldham Athletic

At the end of the 2011/12 season, it became known that Grounds contract with Middlesbrough will not be extended and he will leave the club as a free agent. On July 2, 2012, Jonathan signed a two-year contract with the Oldham Athletic Club, playing in League One [6] . He made his debut on August 13 in the English League Cup match against Sheffield Wensday . On November 24, in a meeting against Shrewsbury Town , he scored the first goal for Latix, bringing his team a 1-0 victory. [7] .

Birmingham City

On June 2, 2014, after the contract with Oldham ended, he moved to the Birmingham City club, signing a two-year contract [8] .
