DistributionThis species is found from Mexico to Argentina , in moist forests . On the territory of its habitat ( South America - the Amazon rainforests ), this is the most numerous species.
The caterpillar is red and purple-striped.
DescriptionThe wingspan of the Greta oto is from 5.5 to 6 cm. The fabric between the veins on the wings of the butterfly is transparent, because it lacks colored scales. The opaque borders of the wings are dark brown, sometimes tin with a red or red glow, and the body itself is also dark in color.
Female Greta oto lays eggs on plants of the genus cestrum , which will then feed on the caterpillar and at the same time collect poisonous alkaloids in the tissue. In the future, an adult butterfly will taste nasty for predators, such as birds .
