Hitlum ( Synd. Hithlum ; apt. Hísilómë, Hísilumbë , translated as “foggy land”) - in the legendary J. R. R. R. Tolkien region in Middle-earth . It was located northwest of Beleriand (not considered a part of it), north of Nevust and west of the plain of Ard Galen (Anfaугlit). It is conventionally divided into Mitrim — the environs of Mitrim Lake — the northern and central territories and Dor-lomin — the south-western part. The mountains of Ered Lomin in the west and Ered Vetrin in the south and east separate Hithlum from the indigenous Beleriand and Lammoth .
The Teiglin , Sirion and Narog rivers originate in the mountains of Ered Vetrin.
Hithlum was cold and rainy, but quite fertile. The Noldor landed at Drengist fjord in Hitlum and set up their first camp on the shores of Lake Mithrim .
Later during the First Age, Hithlum underwent constant attacks from Morgoth and was finally conquered by him after the Nirnaet Arnoediad . The people of the House of Hador were scattered, killed or enslaved; those who did not manage to escape by fleeing the Noldor were turned into slaves and worked in the mines of Morgoth, and in Hitlum Morgoth settled the sterlings .
Hithlum was completely destroyed during the War of Wrath .

Population
Before Exodus Noldor, the population consisted of a small number of Sindar . During the Exodus, the people of Fingolfin came to Hithlum, who, after the death of his elder brother, became the High King of the Noldor of Middle-earth, made Hithlum his domain . Dor Lomin was appointed the domain of Fingon , the eldest son of Fingolfin . Thus, before the arrival of the people, the Hithlum were inhabited mainly by the noldor of the House of Fingolfin and a small number of Sindar, who held the hand of the Second House.
The Noldor of Hithlum, who overcame the crossing of the ice, was rightly considered the most enduring warriors of Beleriand , since they were the first to take on the blows of Morgoth's armies:
... but their people were the most steadfast and valiant, the orcs feared him most and hated Morgoth. [one]

After the people came to the West to the service of Fingolfin, the head of the Edain from the Maraha clan - Hador Golden-Haired (his name became an eponym for the Hadoring tribe), who received land ownership in Dor-Lomin. Thus, Khitlum became the birthplace for the ancient heroic Edain - Hurin , Huor , Turin Turambar and Tuor .
Geography
The main fortifications and the capital of Hithlum are the royal citadel of Eitele Sirion and a number of other fortresses in the mountains of Ered Vetrin .
Dor-lomin
Dor-lomin ( born Dor-lómin , translated from Sindarin - “the land of the echo”) was the south-western part of Hithlum, limited to the Mithrim mountains from the east, and from the north by the river that formed the Rainbow Rash , known as Annonin Gelid ( eng. Annon-in-Gelydh ), "Gate Noldor".
Dor-lomin was first colonized by the Noldor shortly after their arrival in Middle-earth, and for a long time Fingon , son of Fingolfin , ruled them (until he assumed the title of High King Noldor after the death of his father).
By this time, the Edain came to Beleriand , which became known as the House of Hador , and Fingon bestowed on them the land of Dor-lomin as a vassal possession.
Hurin , the son of Galdor, the last lord of Dor-lomin from the Edine, lived at its southwestern end, near the mountain known as Amon Dartir, where the Nan Lalaite river began. After Nirnaet, the Arnoadiad and the capture of Hurin by Morgoth , when the House of Hador was either destroyed or scattered, wasterlings settled in Dor-lomin, and Tuor , the orphaned nephew of Hurin, was raised by the Androth elves in the nearby Mithrim mountains.
Like other parts of Hithlum, Dor-lomin was destroyed during the War of Wrath .
Mithrim
Mithrim was the southeastern part of Hithlum, bordering Dor Lomin in the west, from which it was separated by the Mithrim mountains . The climate of Mithrim was the same as in the rest of Hithlum, the air was cool and the winters were cold, but in general the region was very beautiful.
In Mitrim there was a huge lake Mitrim - the first reservoir in the north of Beleriand, on the shores of which the Noldor settled: the sons of Feanor on the north shore of the lake, and the people of Fingolfin on the south.
The Noldor lived there for some time, until their feuds faded away and they moved to other lands. Elders Sindar also lived in Mitrim, who soon mixed with the Noldor (after the latter learned to speak Sindarin ).
Later, during the First Age , Mithrim was ruled by Fingolfin, since he was the most populated part of Hithlum.
