Story
The poor musician leaves his girlfriend and sick mother, and goes in search of work. The girl goes on business and meets a local bandit Snapper Kid at the door, who has his eyes on the girl and wants to make her his own. But the girl slaps him in the face and leaves. Returning home, the girl finds a dead mother (deceased from old age) and begins to be sad. Nevertheless, luck smiled on the musician and he earned a lot of money. What, in fact, he tells his colleague, having met with him on Pig Alley. Snapper Kid and his gang, hearing this, go after the musician and attack him for the money. The musician decides to return the money and goes in search of Kid. At this time, her friend comes to the girl and trying to cheer, leads her to a party where, it turns out, the bandits spend time. A friend introduces the girl to one of the bandits with whom the girl goes to a bar. There Kid comes to them and tries to take the girl away. There is a quarrel between the two bandits, they decide to figure it out on the street. On the Pig Alley, a gangster showdown takes place. During the shootout, the musician (accidentally caught up there) sees his abuser and attacks him in order to return the wallet. Then runs away. Police appear and Kid is forced to flee. He runs to the girl and sees her with a musician. He, disappointed and angry, leaves. Then the police ran up to him and tried to arrest him, to which Kid said that he had been visiting the girl all the time and asked him to check it. The musician and the girl confirm this. And Kid is released. The musician and the girl are happy.

Feature
According to the film expert Siegfried Krakauer, the cinematic tradition of showing the theme βstreetβ goes back to this film. By this term it means not only displaying the streets of a big city, but also βvarious other places of usual crowds, such as train stations, meeting rooms, bars, hotel lobbies, airports, etc.β. As Krakauer points out in this picture of Griffith, βmost of the action takes place in the dilapidated houses of the New York East Side, on a street teeming with impersonal passers-by, in a cheap cellar and in the courtyard of the apartment building of the urban poor, where teenagers are constantly hanging around,β and the plot of the film, which is built around the theft and ends with the pursuit of a thief is largely generated by these places [1] :
| There are all favorable conditions for the criminal activity of the gang with which the thief is associated; Dangerous meetings take place there and motley companies gather, playing an important role in the plot of the film. Griffith repeated all this with even greater scope in the modern novel of his film Intolerance . |
