Distribution

The range of the family covers South and Central America , Africa from tropical equatorial regions to the very south of the continent; South and Southeast Asia , the Indonesian islands, as well as northeast Australia . A typical habitat for the ocher is tropical rainforest .

The greatest species diversity is observed in South America .

Biological Description

Most of the ochines are shrubs and trees (representatives of the genus Lophyra reach 50 m in height and 2 m in diameter). Some species are shrubs (e.g. Adenarake ) and grasses .

The family has both evergreen and deciduous plants . Leaves with petiole , sometimes leathery (for example, in the genus Ochna ). Leaves with rare exceptions are simple , but there are exceptions (for example, in plants from the genus Godoya leaves are pinnate).

Bisexual flowers .

Some ocher endosperms are present in the seeds (genera Godoya , Luxemburgia , Sauvagesia ...), while others are not present (genera Elvasia , Lophira , Ochna ...).

Usage

In practical terms, African species from the Lofira genus, which are a source of valuable wood , are of greatest importance. The wood of Lophira alata ( Lophira alata ) has a very high resistance against insects and fungi , and therefore finds application as a building material where strength and resistance to decay are required: pillars of fences, steps of stairs, handles of tools.

Some aquatic plants are used as ornamental plants - this primarily refers to plants from the genus Okhna ( Ochna ). They are valued primarily for the bright red-bronze color of young leaves.

Classification

Taxonomic position

According to the classification system APG II ( 2003 ), Ochovaceae are included in the order of Malpighiales in the group of Eurosides I.
