Status

The preservation of the monument is a problem due to the insufficient attention of the authorities, the impact of climatic conditions and individual barbarians. In recent times, a brick factory was located here, later an ancient building served as the basis for a high-voltage tower. On August 12, 1985, 850 poor families broke into the archaeological zone, who founded temporary dwellings there, which eventually turned into permanent ones. At the same time, the monument was looted. The efforts of the Peruvian Institute to evict them have failed. [one]

U-shaped temple

The monument is formed by three large structures located in the form of the letter P around a large area. "Letter P" is open towards the northeast. A similar layout of the building was characteristic of the central coast of Peru in the era of the formation period (2nd millennium BC). [2] Inside the building of the central temple is a smaller building with reliefs on clay. Relief drawings depict humans and animals. Based on these reliefs, a hypothesis has been put forward that Garagay belongs to the Chavin culture .
