The “Implacable” type ( Eng. Implacable class ; pronounced [ɪmˈplækəbl] [1] ) is a series of British heavy aircraft carriers from World War II . In some Russian-language sources, they are referred to under the erroneous transcription “Impleable”. They were created on the basis of aircraft carriers of the “Illastries” type , differing from them in larger dimensions and more powerful aviation equipment for servicing heavier new aircraft . Two aircraft carriers of this type were laid down in 1939 , on the eve of the war, but their construction was completed only by mid- 1944 . For this reason, their participation in the war was limited, but nevertheless both ships managed to take part in the battles, and the Indefatigable suffered damage in the battle for Okinawa . After the war, they were considered unsuitable for use with new jet aircraft because of low hangars , and already in 1950 - 1952 were converted into training aircraft carriers before being finally withdrawn from service in 1954 .
