Aufs (advanced multi-layered unification filesystem) is an alternative version of UnionFS , an auxiliary file system that forms a cascade-integrated mount for Linux file systems. Development has been underway by Junjiro Okajima since 2006. [1] Initially, the acronym stands for AnotherUnionFS
Aufs is a completely rewritten UnionFS code that aims to improve stability and performance. In addition, it introduces some new concepts, such as balancing a recordable branch and other improvements. [2] Some of these ideas were implemented in UnionFS version 2.x.
Aufs has replaced UnionFS in the Linux Knoppix Live CD distribution since late 2006, “for better stability and performance.” [3] This auxiliary file system replaced UnionFS with SLAX (and Linux-Live scripts, in principle) starting from version 6. [4]
Aufs replaced UnionFS in the Linux Xandros distribution, which is used on the ASUS Eee PC 901.
Aufs is used to download Debian Linux live images. [5]
