Biography

Born in 1914 in the village of Kandievka, Kerensky district, Penza province (now the Bashmakovsky district of the Penza region) in a peasant family. Russian

He graduated from junior high school. He worked on a collective farm .

In the Red Army since 1935 . Member of the Great Patriotic War since June 1941 .

Feat

He led a group of sappers who mined the Riga Bridge across the Velikaya River in Pskov . Having ensured the transition of the outgoing units, he was supposed to blow it up, but by the time the command to blow up the bridge was received, the Soviet artillery division remained on the opposite bank. The sappers decided to skip them. While the fighters from the division crossed the bridge, the wire going to the charge was damaged by German artillery. Seeing that the bridge cannot be blown up, Semyon Grigorievich Baykov with several sappers rushed to the farms of the bridge and blew it up with incendiary tubes. Lieutenant Baykov himself, who blew up the support closest to the enemy, died. Rewards

By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of March 16, 1942, for the exemplary performance of command missions at the front of the struggle against Nazi invaders and the courage and heroism shown to this, junior lieutenant Baykov Semen Grigorievich was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.
