Eteocles ( dr. Greek Ἐτεοκλῆς ) - in ancient Greek mythology - the king of Thebes [2] . Mentioned in the Iliad [3] and in the tragedy of Antigone by Sophocles .

Eteocles (literally "Goreslav") [4] is the eldest (or younger [5] ) son of the king of Thebes, Oedipus and Jocasta (or Eurigiania ), brother of Antigone , Ismena and Polinic . After Oedipus learned the truth about his birth and that he was married to his mother, he cursed his sons and retired into exile.
Eteokles and Polynik agreed to rule one at a time, but at the end of the year Etheokles refused to give way to his brother [6] , which led to the performance of the “ Seven Against Thebes ”. The brothers killed each other in a duel.
When the children of Oedipus in Thebes were offered burnt offerings, the flame and smoke were divided in two, diverging in different directions [6] [7] [8] [9] .
The hero of the tragedies of Aeschylus “Seven against Thebes” and Euripides “The Phoenicians”, Seneca “The Phoenician”, the poem by Publius Papinius Station “Thebaid” . According to the scholars of Pindar, the father of Polydor, the grandfather of Gemon, the ancestor of Feron of Akragant. From Cadmus to Feron 27 generations [10] .
Mycenaean texts mention the name e-te-wo-ke-re-we-i-jo - Etevokleveios [11] ). There is a Mycenaean name e-te-wa (“faithful, true”) [12] .
Presumably identified with Tavakalavas in the Hittite texts .
