Georgy Andreyevich Stratanovsky ( May 21, 1901 , St. Petersburg - November 3, 1986 , Leningrad ) - Soviet philologist-antiquary, translator.
Biography
He graduated from Leningrad University in 1925. His main teacher was academician S. A. Zhebelev . He worked as a scientific corrector at the Publishing House of the USSR Academy of Sciences . Since 1936 - teacher of Leningrad State University.
He was arrested in 1921. In 1938 he was again arrested, released in 1939.
In 1941, at the Faculty of History, Leningrad State University, he defended his thesis “Res gestae Augusti (genre and ideology, Hellenistic influences, charismatics)”. In 1942, he was evacuated to Saratov together with the university. After the war, he taught at Leningrad State University and other universities.
Since the early 1960s, he devoted himself entirely to translation activities. Translated by Greek and Novolatian authors. In collaboration with M. N. Botvinnik, he wrote the book “Famous Greeks” - a retelling for children of the biographies of Plutarch (1961).
Son - Stratanovsky, Sergei Georgievich (born 1944), poet, employee of the Russian National Library .
