History

The genus is descended from Grimaldo Canella , who was elected consul of Genoa in 1162 , 1170 and 1184 . His father was also a consul, in 1133 . During the thirteenth century, the Grimaldis held on to the pro-pop politics, for which they formed an alliance with the Fieski clan, from which two pontiffs descended. Together with Fieski, they were twice driven out of the city by the people and Ghibellines .

The bitter bread and steep stairs of the foreign land made Grimaldi fix in different parts of the Ligurian Riviera and even in Sicily . One of these Ligurian castles was Monaco, which Grimaldi first took possession of in 1297 , and finally - a century later, in 1419 . By that time, they had already returned to Genoa and actively participated in the political life of the republic. In 1353 , Admiral Antonio Grimaldi led the Genoese fleet, which gave battle to the Venetian - Catalan off the coast of Sardinia .

In 1506-1507, Monaco had to endure a 102-day siege of Genoese troops. To secure his possessions from the attacks of the Genoese, Lucien Grimaldi, who ruled in Monaco at that time, began to negotiate with Spain. In 1523, Lucien was killed by the Genoese from the Doria family, with whom he was related [1] , so the son Honore I signed an agreement with Spain in 1524 [2] . Under the Treaty of Tordesillas, Monaco recognized vassal dependence on Spain, and Spain guaranteed Monaco security [3] .

After 1528, more peaceful times began in the Republic of Genoa. The Grimaldi retained a place in the apex of the local aristocracy, seven of them elected by the doji :

  1. Antonio Cheba Grimaldi - 1593-1595
  2. Lazzaro Cheb Grimaldi - 1597-1599
  3. Alessandro Grimaldi - 1671—1673
  4. Antonio Cheba Grimaldi II - 1703-1705
  5. Luca Grimaldi - 1728-1730
  6. Giambattista Grimaldi - 1752-1754
  7. Pierfranco Grimaldi - 1773-1775

In the Renaissance quarter of the Palazzi dei Rolly, the most famous is the Grimaldi-built Palazzo Bianco , which now houses an art gallery. The Monaco branch of Grimaldi in 1659 assumed the title of prince, and seventeen years before that, in 1642, the French king Louis XIII restored for them the old title of the dukes de Valentinois . The princes of Monaco spent a lot of time at the court of Versailles and the wives were chosen from among the representatives of the French aristocracy.

In 1733, the Monaco branch of the Grimaldi stopped in the men's knee. The Principality passed through a marriage alliance with the crown heir to the Duke Estuteville of the French Goyon de Matignon family, who, under the terms of the marriage contract, took the name of Grimaldi. The current Grimaldi - Prince Albert II and his sisters Stephanie and Carolina - come from the marriage of Count Polignac with the illegitimate daughter of Prince Louis II (ruled 1922-1949 ).
