Biography
He was ordained priest on March 18, 1962 , in Pesaro . The ordination was performed by the Bishop of Pesaro Luigi Carlo Borromeo . He studied canon law .
In 1968 he entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See , served in the offices of the Holy See in Great Britain , Peru , the Philippines , and Senegal .
On October 6, 1985, he was consecrated as a titular archbishop of Eklanum and appointed apostolic pro-nuncio in Papua - New Guinea and in the Solomon Islands . On October 21, 1989, he was appointed a pro-nuncio in Senegal , Mali , Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau , in December 1994 he was elevated to the rank of nuncio, and on October 2, 1997 he was appointed an apostolic nuncio in Lebanon and Kuwait . December 13, 1999 left the post of Nuncio in Lebanon.
On April 11, 2001, Archbishop Velho was appointed Secretary of the Congregation for the Affairs of the Eastern Churches . And on February 28, 2009 [1] became the chairman of the Pontifical Council on Pastoral Care for Migrants and Traveling . This appointment may in the future help him to be elevated to cardinal dignity .
On January 6, 2012, it was announced that Pope Benedict XVI would elevate Antonio Velho to the rank of Cardinal at the consistory on February 18, 2012 . [2]
On February 18, 2012 , in the Cathedral of St. Peter the Consistory took place, where Antonio Maria Velho was elevated to the rank of Cardinal Deacon with titular deacon of San Cesareo in Palatio . The new Prince of the Church was given a cardinal cap and handed a cardinal ring .

In August 2009, he regretted the deaths of more than 70 Eritreans who were trying to reach Italy in a boat, and implicitly criticized the new, tough immigration policy of the Berlusconi government. [3]
Swiss Minarets Ban
Velho said that the popular vote, held in Switzerland against the construction of additional minarets , was a heavy blow to religious freedom and integration in that country. [4] His colleague Agostino Markettto expressed a slightly different point of view, arguing that the Swiss vote was not a compromise of religious freedom. [five]
