Biography
He studied initially playing the flute and violin at the conductor A. Riemann, later at the conductor A.E. Muller, and already in 1811 acted as a soloist at the flute in the concert of the Levzig orchestra Gevandhaus . He played the flute, violin, viola in the Weimar court chapel. In 1821 , he made his debut as a composer with the opera Wittekind (about Vidukind Saxon ), followed by Flibustier ( German Die Flibustier ; 1830 ), Princess Granada ( German Die Fürstin von Granada ; 1833 ), etc .; Among other works, Lobe includes many compositions for flute, two symphonies, several overtures, various chamber ensembles.
In 1842 , Lobe retired and opened his own music school in Weimar. From 1846 he taught at Leipzig, Professor of Composition at the Leipzig Conservatory . Lobe's main work is “The Doctrine of Composition, or the General Theory of thematic Work and New Musical Forms” (German: Compositions-Lehre oder umfassende) with B. Marx) and thematic work inside the musical form is discussed in detail. Lobe’s textbook on composition ( German Lehrbuch der musikalischen Komposition ) in four volumes (harmony, instrumentation, counterpoint, opera), published from 1850 to 1867 , enjoyed great prestige. (in 1884 - 1887 reprinted in the edition of Hermann Krechmar ; the fourth volume was published in 1898 in Russian: "A Guide to Composing Music. Volume 4. Opera"). The book “The Musical Catechism” ( German: Katechismus der Musik ; 1851 ) was extremely popular; it stood 26 editions by 1896 ; in 1898 it was published in Russian translation, made by P. I. Tchaikovsky . He also published three volumes of Notes on Music ( German: Fliegende Blätter für Musik ; 1853-1857 ), Lightweight Harmony Textbook ( German: Vereinfachte Harmonielehre ; 1861 ), a collection of articles on various musical themes: “Consonances and Dissonances” ( German). Konsonanzen und Dissonanzen ; 1869 ) and a number of other books.
He also acted as a music critic, in 1846 - 1848 . edited the Universal Musical Gazette .
