Antrim in ESBE
At the beginning of the 20th century, the Brockhaus and Efron Encyclopedic Dictionary described this territorial unit on its pages:
“ Antrim is a county and city in Ireland, in the province of Ulster. Its area is 3091 square meters. km, residents in 1881, there were 423171 hours, of which urban population 41 percent, Catholics 28 percent. The eastern part of it is occupied by an uneven, hilly country of a predominantly trapp formation; its height reaches 475 m in Divis, 512 m in Nolayd, and 549 m in Trostan. The shores are high. In the western corner in front of the harbor of Port Ruz is a group of small islands called Skerry; to the east, immeasurable basalt masses, known as Giant's Causeway, or the Giant Dam; In S. The interior of the county is dominated by plains; such is the basin of Lake Nig with the tributary of the Main and the sources of Bann. Cattle breeding is well developed, flax production, compared with the past, has decreased. The main branch of the factory industry is flax processing, but along with it there is also cotton production. The center of this industry, as well as of trade, is Belfast, the first factory city of Ireland, and now the main city of the county A. Fisheries, especially salmon fishing, are concentrated in two districts: Carrickferg and Belcastle; in the latter there are still extensive salt and coal mines. The county is divided into 14 baronets and 75 church parishes; sends to the House of Commons 6 deputies: two from the county itself, 2 from Belfast and one each from Carrickferg and Lisburn. In addition to these 3 cities, a prominent place is occupied by: Ballymena (7931) and Larna (3288).
The city of A., the old Entrum-Nig, the former main town of the county, lies not far from the confluence of the Six-Mail-Water-Lake into Lake Nig, 21 km northwest of Belfast. In this city 2020. Fair, strait and working at home. Previously, A. represented a significant center, sending up to the union of two deputies to the Irish parliament and enjoying certain privileges. Near A. there is a monument of ancient Irish architecture - a round tower with a conical roof, 29 meters high; This tower has been preserved better than any other monuments of this kind. Nearby cities are located: Shenkastel, the old residence of the family name O'Nel, and Antrim-Castell, the residence of the Sceffittons ”.
