Octaver

Octaver ( Eng. Octaver ) - a sound effect or corresponding device that adds to its signal a copy of it an octave or two lower or higher than the main tone . The very designation “octaver” is mainly used to process the sound of an electric guitar. A similar effect in synthesizers is called “sub-oscillator”.

Octaver is a special case of pitch shifter .

Features

When using the octave, it seems that instead of one instrument, two are playing, in different octaves. In some effect pedals, such as, for example, the Boss OC-2, it is possible to add two additional tones at the same time - one octave below the main, the other two octaves below the main. Moreover, each of them can be adjusted in volume, mixing in the desired proportion.

Most octaves are monophonic, i.e. cannot finish building octaves to chords. Polyphonic (digital) octaves can process a signal containing several notes (for example, Electro-Harmonix POG).

Principle of Operation

Analog octaves work as follows. A signal an octave higher than the original is created using a diode bridge or another current rectifier that inverts one half-wave of the signal. The signal an octave lower is created by converting the corresponding frequency into the square wave (for example, using the RS-trigger), after which the frequency of the square wave can be easily divided into the desired number of times in digital form. The sound output is buzzing and “electronic”.
