Forgotten Realms is the best-known game world for the Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) role-playing game, created by Canadian writer and game developer Ed Greenwood . The Kingdoms became the most popular of the D&D worlds in the 1990s and 2000s thanks to Robert Salvatore's novels , as well as the Baldur's Gate , Icewind Dale , and Neverwinter Nights series of computer games. The setting focuses most on a continent called Fairun , part of the planet Abeyr-Toril .
This is a well-developed vast fantasy world in which there are many characters, places and events described in a long list of game products, novels and applications published since the late 1980s . This is now one of several D&D settings that are officially published and developed by Wizards of the Coast , along with Eberron , Dark Sun , and Gamma World . The world's fiction “Forgotten Realms” began to be mass-produced in Russian after 2004 . Game literature (semi-artistic, describing the mechanics, device, and subtleties of the world) has not been officially published in Russian , but unofficial translations can be found in the Russian segment of the Internet .

Setting History
First Edition
Greenwood initially created Forgotten Realms to run his own adventure campaigns, after which he began to print small articles describing this world in Dragon Magazine . Although the Kingdoms were not yet a fully official gaming world, their first adventure, the H1 Bloodstone Pass , was released in 1985 by TSR. The first fully official Forgotten Realms Campaign Set was released a little later, in 1987 , as a boxed set of two books and four large maps, developed by Ed Greenwood in collaboration with Jeff Grubb and Karen Mortin .
Late 1980s - Mid 1990s
Following the success of the Forgotten Kingdoms Campaign Kit in May 1987, the first novel around the world, Dark Forces over the Moonshine (the first in the Moonshine Trilogy) by Douglas Niles , was published. The following year, the first novel about the adventures of a very popular character, Drizzt Do'Urden, was released, which then appeared in seventeen novels, many of which were on the New York Times bestseller list. In 1988 , the first computer role-playing game in the world of the Forgotten Kingdoms, Pool of Radiance, was released by SSI. The game was quite popular and received several sequels.
The setting was redesigned in 1993 to fit the new second revision of the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons ( AD&D ) rule system, then the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting Campaign Setting was released, which included three books and cards with additional monsters. Additional game materials for the setting, as well as many novels by various authors, were constantly released throughout the 1990s.
Late 1990s - Today
In 1998, Baldur's Gate was released , the first in a line of popular computer role-playing games released by Bioware for a personal computer. The game had several sequels, the most famous of which are Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn ( 2000 ) and Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal , Icewind Dale - a separate game, but released on the same engine. Some popular characters from the Forgotten Kingdoms, such as Drizzt Do'Urden and Elminster, have occasionally appeared in these games.
Following the release of the revised third edition of the Dungeons & Dragons rules , released in 2000 by Wizards of the Coast , the Forgotten Realms campaign set was also revised in 2001 . Soon, the computer games Neverwinter Nights and Icewind Dale 2 came out, the actions of which also took place in the world of Forgotten Realms, and the role-playing system was based on the rules of the D&D 3rd edition. Neverwinter Nights gained great fame, several official additions and a huge number of unofficial ones came out to it. Icewind Dale 2 , for the first time, made it possible to play for subraces, such as drow , tiefling, etc. Later, Neverwinter Nights 2 came out. The system in it was already based on version 3.5 of the Dungeons & Dragons edition.
In August 2008, the fourth edition of the campaign set was released (June of the same year), which included updated information about the world, a well-developed gaming city, new monsters and NPCs , as well as a color map of Faerun. On the cover of the book is a drow explorer Drizzt Do'Urden . The book was later reprinted.
Since 2009, the Shadow Valley Forum has picked up the baton of fiction translations of "Forgotten Kingdoms." At the time of August 2011, the fans translated: The Trilogy of the “Repenting Lady” by Lisa Smedman, “The Broken Plain” by Thomas Reid, “The Ruins” by Richard Lee Byers, “The Ghost King” and “Gontlgrim” by Robert Anthony Salvatore, as well as dozens of stories from anthologies. All translations are in the public domain and anyone can get access to them.
Currently, officially in Russian, art books from the series “Forgotten Kingdoms” have ceased to be translated and published. According to the FANTastika publishing house, the series will continue to be published if only in the “club edition”.
Fantastic Book Club Publishing House has received permission to publish Forgotten Realms and DragonLance comics and books in Russia.
The first book of the package is approved - this is the Dark Elf omnibus. Oversized edition (70x100 / 16) on white paper, selective varnishing. The text has been updated with some changes to the onomastics. The estimated release date is the beginning of September 2014.
In September-October, "Neverwinter" and "Anthology of Legends" will also be released.
In May 2011, Daggerdale , Action RPG, adapted to the console to a greater extent, saw the light of day , and at the end of 2011 an online multiplayer game was announced - Neverwinter . It is worth noting that Wizards of the Coast , has created a whole brand - Neverwinter , under which they publish both fiction ( Salvatore trilogy), game ( Neverwinter Campaign Setting ) literature, and computer games (the aforementioned Neverwinter ).
World Information
Geography
There are several parts of the world on the planet Toril or Abeyr-Toril : Faerun , on which the setting focuses, Kara-Tur (the world of the medieval East), Zakhara (the world of Arabian tales), Matstika (the world of pre-Columbian America) and continents that have not yet been discovered and not described.
Faerun is located in the northwestern part of the mainland of Toril. To the east of it stretch the boundless steppes of the Horde Land, along which numerous tribes of nomad barbarians wander. These lands are also called the Endless Wasteland. The nomads living there call their land Taan. In the south, along the shores of the Great Sea lies the Land of Fate, Zakhara. In the northwest lies the North. This inhospitable region extends from the coast of the Sea of Floating Ice to the sands of Anorokh , from the Ridge of the World to Deep Water, and the endless caves of the Underdark stretch many miles deep into the earth below the surface.
Religion
Religion plays an important role in the world of Forgotten Kingdoms. There are several racial and geographical pantheons, each of which has a large number of gods of varying degrees of strength. In general, they resemble the Greek pantheon, only with the difference that there is no kinship between the gods. The gods affect all aspects of the life of the inhabitants of the world - in fact, the world of the West Coast is the arena of their struggle for followers, and as a result for power. Their intervention in mortal affairs is not limited only by divine powers, but also by direct intervention through their churches, as well as avatars (mortal incarnations of the gods). As a result of the conspiracy of several dark gods in the world of ZK, events known as the Time of Troubles or the Avatar Crisis took place, during which the gods were overthrown in the guise of mortal avatars in the lands of Faerun. This time did not last more than a year, but turned into terrible disasters for some lands, as well as the death of several gods and the deification of several mortals.
